As many before me have said -- a good dog doesn't come in a bad color.

So coat color genetics is irrelevant in itself. But as a way to learn genetics, it is a fascinating tool. What is also important to note, is that basic misunderstandings about coat color genetics can often lead to basic misunderstanding about other areas of genetics, like health. The AMCA approved an inconsistent list of colors for AKC registration.

	Black is not black, it's seal. Black is actually tan point and very rare, puppies are born nearly solid black.
	All reds are reds, even tho they are browns and browns come in as many variations as the black/gray dogs.
	All sables are sables, from light lilac sables to gray sables to seals sables... except red sables and they are reds.

This isn't even logical, but that's what we have to work with.
