2009 "BEAR" Litter Notes

11/1/08 Honey & Maestro tied today and the day after.  Panacur 3 days in a row for mom Honey.
12/26/08
(54 days)
Honey moved into the office crate so she's be close to me and has privacy from the other dogs.  She goes out to potty with 4m Pax and 9y Tom T., both males, and grumps at them, but they are very savvy with the ladies and know when to stay away. She gets a bath tonight.   Pictures of Honey waiting...

Sunday
Honey due today and whelped today, will give Panacur 3 days after birth, this treats moms for parasites twice, and both times when her system is most vulnerable to infection.   Puppies will have their own deworming treatment, which she will copy, but there is no reason for them to be born with a parasite load.  Pups born (not in order below -- 11:03a, 12:12p, 12:43p, 1:06p, & 2:19p -- she doesn't have a lot of milk, but pups are suckling and that will bring it down.  Pups are belly-full, warm, dry, and not crying -- so there is enough to keep them happy.  Pictures online.  The BEAR pups are:
Female1 - seal & white, full mask, bar & goggles, large eye spots, very light sable undercoat, color down the hocks, further down the RT forearm than the L forearm, some graying on RT leg and belly, white tail tip, already has pigment filling in on nose
Male1 - wolf sable & white, thin blaze, double bar, thin snippet & goggles, sm. eyespots, brilliant sable undercoat, color down the hocks, further down the RT forearm than the L forearm, sabling on face, white tail tip, already has pigment filling in on nose
Male2 - seal & white, fat bar, full goggles, sm. eyespots, blue-black undercoat today, color down both hocks and forearms, black belly, bands on chest, tiniest white tail tip, already has pigment filling in on nose & toes
Male3 - seal & white, split bar, tiniest snippet, full goggles, large sable eyespots & sable muzzle, blue-black undercoat (today), color down both hocks and forearms, black belly, bands on chest, black tail tip, already has pigment filling in on nose
Male4 - seal sable & white, full tear-drops mask, heavy sabling and graying on face/legs/belly, tiny sable eyespots, color down both hocks and forelegs, grayed AND sabled on lower legs, black belly, bands on chest, black tail tip, already has pigment filling in on nose

Sunday-2w
Pups have really plumped up, filled their skins, and started to grow.  Eyes are opening right on schedule and they have started to use their voices right on time as well.  One of them has a chirpy trill that sounds like baby birds.  The others all have traditional mice-howl.  Colors have stabilized and they are now:
Female1 - dark gray with beige-y undercoat
Male1 - wolf sable like poppa Maestro and grandpop Kip
Male2 - seal like black silk, may be long-coat
Male3 - seal like black velvet
Male4 - seal sable like Honey with teardrop mask like Honey

This litter has potty trained itself.  The weather has been bitterly cold and wet, so they are still in the house, moved from the living room to the kitchen tile floor.  When momma Honey goes out, they all pile out after her, stop on the weepads put in front of their crate, pee and poop, and then tumble back into the crate for the puppy kibble scattered on the floor.  They grab a bite, come tumbling back out, tails pinwheeling, and begging for attention, and then, tumble back inside for another bite.  We play this game for about 5 minutes, then they pee and poop on the weepads again, I clean up the mess as they make a pile and go to sleep.  Honey comes back inside in half an hour and it's time for a drink and clean-up and then another nap.

The female is staying here, she is Kiowa Grizzly Bear and already smart enough to climb INTO the stainless steel food bucket and go to sleep -- because it's COOLER in there and her brothers leave her alone.

They like peanut butter in puppy Kongs, and hard boiled eggs, cream cheese, butter, salmon, and canned puppy food... they aren't very gentlemanly about it either.

Each puppy spends part of the day in my lap while I'm working on the computer or in the evening cuddled up while we watch classic John Wayne movies, the noise of gunshots and explosions and the bright lights don't bother them any more, and they like the sound of a deep-voiced drawl.

Saturday - Happily outgoing, calm curiosity, these puppies have mama Honey's calmness and daddy Maestro's brains.  They met the 6w Antarctic puppies with tails helicoptering, grinning, and paws slapping.  Then played for an hour, shared their lunch without a grumble, and then fell into a pile in the cool winter sun for an afternoon nap. Pictures.

Playdate with Rtic's babies - Pictures
Male1 is going to look just like Daddy Maestro when he grows up, lucky boy.  But the whole litter ACTS just like Daddy Maestro -- full of joy and energy and always, always happy.  Honey is a content dog, these guys are all joyfull.
